In the village of Moutiers-Saint-Jean is a former hospice founded in 1661 by Claude Charles Rochechouart Chandenier, a friend of Saint Vincent de Paul. Today it is a retirement home, but parts of it are open to the public. The highlight is its very beautiful apothecary, which has been preserved in its original state. The magnificent wood panelled room, with ornate twisted columns, displays over 200 pharmacy jars, pillboxes and pewter pots which originate from Nevers, Vausse near Chatel-Gerard, Rouen and Italy.
The apothecary is open in July and August, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 pm to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 2 pm to 6 pm.
