The apothecary

DSC05275In the village of Moutiers-Saint-Jean is a former hospice founded in 1661 by Claude Charles Rochechouart Chandenier, a friend of Saint Vincent de Paul. Today it is a retirement home, but parts of it are open to the public. The highlight is its very beautiful apothecary, which has been preserved in its original state. The magnificent wood panelled room, with ornate twisted columns, displays over 200 pharmacy jars, pillboxes and pewter pots which originate from Nevers, Vausse near Chatel-Gerard, Rouen and Italy.

The apothecary is open in July and August, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 pm to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 2 pm to 6 pm.

The Royal Abbey of Moutiers

abbaye moutiers-saint-jean

Founded around 450 by St. John of Réome, the royal abbey of Moutiers is the oldest in Burgundy. The abbey church, destroyed during the revolution, was as magnificent as Vézelay and Autun. In the eighteenth century the title of Abbot of Moutiers was given to bishops and the Dukes of Langres. Between 1747 and 1763 they built the abbey palace we see today, a masterpiece designed by the famous architect Claude Louis Aviler.

Open to the public: the cloister gallery, the grand staircase, the surviving tiled floor of the monks’ gallery, and furnished interiors (living rooms, the bathroom of the bishop, and three bedrooms).

The Moutiers-Saint-Jean Abbey will be open from Saturday April 16th to Saturday July 9th 2022, from Wednesday to Sunday (and public holidays) from 2.30 pm to 6 pm.
