Musée Buffon

National historical monument

The museum offers a journey through the history of science and nature through the eyes of two important naturalists born in Montbard : Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) and Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton (1716-1800). The museum holds important collections from both men, and there are regular temporary exhibitions about their artistic and scientific endeavours.

Parc Buffon

Built by Buffon between 1733 and 1742, the park is closely linked to the history of the former castle of the Dukes of Burgundy which was on this site. The park today is a lovely place to walk with a great view of the surrounding countryside. It was declared a national monument in 1947.

Tour de l’Aubespin et Tour Saint-Louis

These two towers date to the fourteenth century, and along with the church of Saint Urse and the ramparts, are all the visible remains of the ancient medieval fortress. At a height of 40 meters, the Tower of Aubespin has four arched rooms and an upper terrace with a remarkable panorama of Montbard and the Brenne valley crossed by the Burgundy Canal. The tower of Saint-Louis was rebuilt by Buffon in the eighteenth century, firstly as his summer study, and later his laboratory and library.

Buffon’s study

Buffon spent thousands of hours here alone, composing the 36 volumes of his “General and specific Natural History”. The walls are covered in watercolour prints by François-Nicolas Martinet that illustrate the Natural History of Birds. The beautiful marble fireplace and the portrait of Isaac Newton enhance the special atmosphere of this room.
